Senior Energy Scheduler
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Energy Scheduler is responsible for making real-time scheduling decisions related to Ormat’s merchant portfolio and off-take obligations. This position will require interfacing daily and hourly with the Balancing Area Authority (BAA) operators, plant operations, and various off takers to optimize Ormat’s commercial position while mitigating market risk and observing physical asset constraints.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for the communication of scheduling information to Ormat and BAA personnel.
- Retrieve plant operating information from the various Ormat facilities.
- Create generation forecast for each unit based on outage information, weather forecast, and historical plant performance.
- Create BAA schedules and NERC e-tags, based on generation forecast, using third party software systems and spreadsheets.
- Upload schedules to BAA portals. Use manual work-around processes as needed to ensure schedules are received by the BAA operators and counterparties.
- Continually monitor NERC e-tags for changes to approved tags and work with impacted plants and BAA operators to minimize generation imbalance.
- Monitor generation imbalance and adjust NERC e-tags to minimize financial impact.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies prior to the scheduling deadlines by collecting scheduling information from BAA operators, plant operations, and counterparties.
- Primary point of contact with counterparties to resolve scheduling issues prior to the scheduled flow of energy.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly financial and energy imbalance settlement functions.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review new structured transaction contracts and prepare summaries of concerns and potential changes to internal process for the energy scheduling manager.
- Test new or modified computer systems.
- Propose changes to processes and software associated with Ormat’s scheduling operations to improve interactions with the BAA operators, plant operation’s staff, and counterparties.
- Analyze, interpret, and enhance generation forecasting tools to meet performance metrics.
- Subject Matter Expert on energy scheduling throughout the company.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, engineering or similar degree or combination of equivalent work experience or education
- 2 years’ experience in the energy industry either in working in wholesale electricity markets or in the field in support of generation assets. Preferred candidate can demonstrate working knowledge of the WSCC transmission system, NERC e-tagging, and has a general understanding of the Western energy imbalance market and generation plant operations.
- Possess analytical skills and is detailed oriented
- Possess financial acumen to evaluate commercial performance of generation assets and implement strategies to improve financial performance.
- Possess time management skills to successfully plan and execute objectives within established timelines.
- Proficient with basic computer applications and Microsoft Office products. Experience with third-party software systems is preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
- Ability to recognize and analyze problems and develop effective solutions at strategic and functional levels.
- Experience as a team player who can accomplish tasks by working with others and being a strong team player. Recognizes how their decisions may impact others; seeks input from others.
- Must be able to function in a control room environment.
- Must be willing and able to work up to 12-hour shifts during days, nights, and weekends.
- Must be willing to accommodate rotational shiftwork hours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The ability to work at a computer, and computer monitor, and use repetitive motion for long periods of time.
- Meet the highest attendance requirements.
- The ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
- This position requires sitting 80% of the time and standing and walking 20% of the time.
